Inner cables are usually produced in a length that is longer than needed, and rely on the installer cutting the cable to the required length. This leaves the end of the multiple twisted wires that form the cable exposed and prone to fraying from their uniform round cable shape.
Frayed cable ends will make servicing very tricky, as re-threading a frayed cable end through outer casing, stops and eyebolts becomes almost impossible to successfully achieve.
Frayed ends are also potentially dangerous as they are needle sharp against skin.
The traditional method of preventing a cut cable from fraying is to either apply a blob of solder to the end (which factory cut cable often include), or more commonly to use a “crimp-on” cap or “cable end” (usually made a malleable metal – such as aluminium alloy).
Such crimp-on cable end caps work well, but, cause an issue when you need to remove them.
The majority of people end up having to cut them off, which, inevitably means the inner cable gets increasingly shortened. Re-fitting a previously crimped cable end is not a practical option, and a new one will be required. This is all fine – if you have a stash of them in your workshop, along with a crimp tool.
Fire Wire Hot Tips are aluminium cable ends that can easily be removed and re-fitted by hand to allow the cyclist to carryout whatever cable servicing is required. The miniature bullet shaped aluminium caps incorporate a threaded collet system that allows the
“Hot Tips” to gently clamp-on to the inner cable. Fire Wire Hot Tips can be fitted and removed over and over again, using only some strong fingers (or pliers.)
No cutting or crimping required.
